Have you experienced a layoff recently? Were you downsized or simply had a position eliminated? If you responded yes to the questions above, know that I can empathize.
I experienced my first layoff in 2012 when I worked for a nonprofit organizations in Richmond, Virginia. The experience was humbling and painful. It felt as if a part of me had died. I lost my sense of value and self-worth and it caused me to doubt my abilities, skills and talents.
Until one day, I was inspired to leverage my experience, knowledge and network to launch YBConnects, LLC. During that time, I was gaining momentum in using LinkedIn as a tool to expand my network. I attended networking groups, reconnected with my college alumni network (Virginia Union University National Alumni Association, Inc.) and eventually attracted my first client - a fellow graduate of Virginia Union University who was seeking employment and wanted to leverage LinkedIn to find her next position. She hired me because of my ability to promote my VTR.
The first move you should make in your transition
In this episode of the TalentFred Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with my Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity brother Fred Scott about my experience being laid off and making a pivot into becoming "The LinkedIn Locksmith" which I'm known as in many cirlces.
During our conversation, Fred asked "when someone has their own brand and their own journey, what is the first move you would tell them to make?"
Watch the video below to hear my response to his question.
The VTR Framework for Building Your Personal Brand
In the video, you heard the term VTR Framework. This idea was developed during my time as a member of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce. It's a powerful strategy to articulate the value you bring to the marketplace.
V (Verb): What do you do exceptionally well without overthinking it? This is often a natural gift that multiple people have complimented you on [02:04].
T (Target): Who needs the consistent result you provide? Identify the specific audience that benefits most from your expertise [03:05].
R (Result): What consistent, tangible outcome do you deliver? Focus on the measurable benefit your target gets every time [02:39].
What is the goal The VTR Framework?
The goal of The VTR Framework is to create a value statement that draws people in—making you a magnet for opportunities rather than a chaser [04:27].
Whenever you are networking in person or online, you will be asked "what do you do?" Instead of promoting your title or saying "I'm unemployed", tell the person your VTR statement. This may not attract the person immediately, but it will educate them as to the value you bring and who benefits most from what you have to offer.
Developing your VTR will keep you focused on adding value first. It will also position you to attract the right opportunities and people who can help you reach your goal.
Being laid off from your job is not a pleasant experience. However, if you reflect on the 3 main assets that you possess, you'll not only increase your value by becoming an asset; you'll begin to accumulate financial currency because of your ability to acquire social currency.
